Damien Hirst

Is arguably a symbol of neo liberalism. Of the art it recognised and the way it was valued. It is quite interesting that the emperors new clothes appear to be falling off there. I think.

That said, I don’t dismiss everything he has done out of hand. As an artist he is certainly symbolic of western culture, in it’s last days as dominators of the world. It says a great deal. While prices for his work may be falling, I think that change in price is very much a reflection of that culture changing. If I had a spot painting or a sheep in formaldin I’d probably hang on to it for a decade or so. But then I’d have used half that sheep for chops, so what would I know?
